lukin: I had forgotten all about that Dark Sun game until you mentioned it. That game was the SHIT for a minute. I see you have a half-giant but those little bald guys were not exactly human and kicked the most ass. When I was a kid I made a fat drawing with all kinds of characters and races from those stories having a big ass war, taken from a scene in one of the books where they were in some kind of caravan or somethin.

psz: I remember games like Pool of Radiance (the father of that huge series) well! That one was particularly hard because, IIRC, you only had a few classes to choose from, and unlike some of the later ones, could not adjust your characters' stats, but just had to re-roll until they were acceptable. I also remember that body being one of the only 2 or 3 acceptable ones, and that you could put that bearded dude on some fat breasts np. Also your guys could only get so strong before they capped and the final boss was definitely taking some folks with him. Did you ever try to start a riot in town? You had to break the law then get busy with the security forces. If you beat them, they had another wave instantly, and it got harder each time. I got up to like 4th wave one time and it was screens of mages and shit.

Pont mentioned Dungeon Master, of which I played part II or III and loved it a lot.

I think this game my mom had me playing when I was real little was called Zork? It was all text and it was SO FUCKING HARD. The tiniest, teeniest little mistake and You have been eaten by a grue!!! Game fucking OVER. No direction whatsoever on exactly wtF you were supposed to be doing to even begin to defend yourself or get anything accomplished.

Also the first Warcraft game. ZugZug.

I once had a 6 or 7 digit ICQ #. After the first time I quit UO and came back, ICQ was still in use, and I realized how long the numbers were getting. I tried and tried and tried to remember my old number... 823.... Damnit.

Original Pool of Radiance let you adjust stats (to match a pen'n'paper char).... This led to massive cheating by way of having 6 "all 18s" in the party ;->

I remember an exploit whereby when you first start out (party is based in New Phlan, next to zero gear, some spare change to go by), you can head to the Mercenary Hiring Hall / Training Hall and enlist the services of a 'standard' level-5 fighter... the merc comes decked out with Platemail +3 and Two-handed sword +3...

Get him to disarm / undress all his gear, engage in battle with some lowly kobolds, send naked merc fighter forth to 'barefist' the kobold horde, sit back and watch ensuing mob gank / beatdown the hired help, once merc fighter is down, move in and dispatch the horde..

At the end of battle, when you are back to the regular party / movement interface, the merc fighter will be incapacitated, which now allows your party to dry loot him of his +3 gear for your own use... when you head back to New Phlan, you need not ress the merc, just dump his insensate carcass from your party.. head to Hiring Hall, enlist another level-5 fighter... repeat...

And when you finally commence with the story line, you'll have a party of newbies all kitted out with +3 gear (and *cough* maxed-out 18 stats)

Fun times...

Since a lot of these are old NES games, I'll start with one...

I opt to blame this game for any difficulties I may or may not have in relating to women. (points to whoever knows the game well enough to explain :p)

Also, while I did really like the remake here, I actually DID play the original before OpenTTD was ever started. And I was thrilled when I learned of the remake.

And for a resource-simulator game with little strategy, and a fixed progression and storyline, this somehow wound up having way more reply value than it ought to have.

challenging gameplay,
That boss is only hard until you realized that's the one boss in the entire game you can use magic on. Or you could just be overleveled like I was.

Though granted, it had some of the most epic music I'd ever heard.

I spent way too much time on that game when I was little. Though I actually kinda grew to despise that track. I preferred the overworld's softer, more relaxing theme. That, and I was creeped out how the dungeon's theme kept getting slower and lower in pitch.

rofl I spent two weeks in the fall of my college freshman year leveling and equipping an invincible party of elves or something and then was disappointed to the max when the actual "game" took like 2 hours to complete. Promptly joined a fraternity and when I wasn't drinking, vomiting, or hooking up (w/vomit on my shirt) spent the 2nd semester of my freshman year playing:

And then my sophomore year (as an alcoholic) this fucking game came out!

The iowa state university computer lab was ablaze w/local area network games of warcraft2 ASIANS VS NON! Those were the motherfucking days! Back when the lab monitor earned his/her pay "INSTALL THIS FUCKING GAME FOR ME U SUPER-GEEK" :)

Why does Ultima 7 have better graphics then UO?/?
It's actually semi-comparable; U7, U8, and UO are all full-256-color games by default. However, U7 and U8 were programmed to run on an ordinary VGA adaptor, which conventionally is limited to 320x200 when in 256-color (8bpp) mode. UO requires a "superVGA" adapater, which readily allows for 640x480 and higher in 8bpp mode. (or potentially much higher; there was no fixed standard for maximum framebuffer size for SVGA cards, nor really for XGA cards)

For this kind of puzzle adventure games I think it's good yes.
Good story, good atmosphere, the puzzles can be a bit frustrating sometimes and the game can be a bit slow paced but I think if you like this kinds of puzzle games (myst, rama etc)
you will like this one.
Divine divinity is a great game I played a lot, they don't make good rpgs like they used to.

Planescape Torment
Fallout 1&2
Icewind Dale
Baldur's Gate
Arcanum

Spent many hours playing those :)
