Re: Workout regiment
I didn't think I offered any bad advice, but then again I didn't really say all that much. I worked out fairly consistently and played sports intramurally or otherwise from age 10-23. As long as you stretch well, and do a little warmup and cooldown, it's not really rocket science. Yeah, there are a lot of subtle things you can do to optimize your gains, but it's not like you aren't going to benefit.
Generally, people do low rep stuff (where you can only manage 4-6 reps or so) to build muscle mass - Don't worry about this much at first, focus on strength and tone until you get comfortable with the exercises and proper form and technique. This stuff can be dangerous too if you are alone and inexperienced, so skip it for now.
To build tone - you go higher reps 12-16 or so. You generally use enough weight so that you can only manage that many reps. For this you can actually go even higher reps if desired. Feel the burn in your muscles. For abs, I used to do sets of 50-100 situps, because most people don't really want a huge (but powerful midsection). There are a lot of different ab techniques out there (inclines, leg-lifts, etc), but focus on getting that burn going.
To build general strength - 8-12 reps. You will feel a bit of fatigue in the muscles here. They just won't be able to do more or finish another rep if you are using the right amount of weight.
Gradually increase the weight as you improve. For a while, you are just going to be figuring out what to do, how to use the equipment, and how much you can actually lift. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you are going to burn just sitting around. Don't overthink this stuff, just start doing something, don't forget to stretch first, warm up a little with a light cardio like jumping rope or whatever, and you'll be fine. You'll be better than fine. I'm just a shadow though of my former self at the moment, a slightly larger shadow I suppose.

And I wouldn't have been embarrassed by that picture that got posted. She always seemed like a sweet and attractive girl to me.
