Upcoming Server Move

Upcoming Server Move

Hybrid will be moving to Cincinnati, OH later this month. It is currently hosted in Dallas, TX.

Demise and Divinity were moved there in April and the overall response has been positive. The websites were also moved to Cincinnati recently and I'm sure you've all noticed how much faster the forums are now.

If you are interested in seeing what your latency will be like after the move you can traceroute and ping 209.173.139.110 (Hybrid's current IP address is 67.192.185.136).

Those on the east coast, central United States, Canada, and Europe should see a reduction in latency, no packet loss (compared to transient losses over some of the congested Texas links), less jitter (latency variation), and lower hop counts. Users on the west coast can generally expect their latency to increase 20-30ms but should still see a significant overall improvement given the reduction in packet loss and jitter (which affect gameplay much more than latency).

Guys a few things to keep in mind... if you're going to complain about pings...

If I ran a straight shot of fiber from Denver to Cincinnati for players on the west coast the theoretical minimum ping is about 20ms (this is figuring 200 * 10^6 meters per second for the speed of light (through fiber optic cable)) when you factor in various splices along the way, various network equipment you're going to hit in the area of ~40 - 45ms of latency from Denver.

The bottom line is that ping is not nearly as important as things like jitter and packetloss. Your number one enemy in this game is packetloss and you've been experiencing it all day long in Texas. In order to improve the performance we are getting out of the states where congestion is a major problem (Texas) and moving to Ohio.

This is good for a few reasons... it drastically lowers our bills (long term). Short term I'm spending an astronomical amount of money on servers to do all of this... however once we reach the return on investment for the hardware which will take approximately 12 months our bills will be cut in 1/5th of what they were every month for the past two years. This is a significant cost savings and it allows us to provide MUCH better servers/service.

Thanks for your support... and expect a knockout raffle to come aroud the corner soon to help pay for this new server :)

One other thing I forgot... this DRASTICALLY improves latency for foreign players.

Ryan,
First of all I have 0 packet loss. However since I am in Oklahoma and the current provider has a direct connection to my ISP (AT&T) my ping is super fast. However, I understand that that the same provider has connections with other networks that would cause some people to have packet loss and what not. There will be no change at all in game play from a 20MS ping to a 45MS ping. I am not really bitching. In fact I am all for anything that lowers the bills and allows this to continue. :) I just liked being able to brag that I had about the fastest ping to the server.
Thanks for all you do for us (You too Mark).

old (67.192.185.136): 122 ms with 13 hops
new (209.173.139.110): 134ms with 10 hops

I have thought the new one would be better, since i live in the middle of Europe.

Less hops is better. To hell with ping. Your under 200ms your fine.
