Massive Lag

Forum is my last port of call, I've looked at all the FAQ's and troubleshooters but just can't get to the bottom of this lag.

I have a fast broadband connection yet I'm getting 500-1200ms in UO only (Didn't have this problem in WoW, vent runs fine, videos buffer fast etc)

I've tried the diagnostic tool, UOTrace and apparently everything's in order and working smoothly, yet I'm freezing every few steps. I've also forwarded all the ports - Still lagging. Also, no firewall blocking.

My ISP is AOL, 2mb Broadband, Belkin Wireless router version: F5D7633-4Av1

Anyone know the reason behind this lag?

Go to START then RUN and type CMD and hit enter. In the black box, type "ping login.uogamers.com" (without quotes) and hit enter. Copy and paste the entire segment of output from that command. Further, hit CTRL ALT DEL to bring up windows security or task manager; if windows security prompts, select task manager. On the processes tab, click the column for CPU usage to sort by highest CPU usage. Launch UO and sit somewhere quiet such as Minoc Bank; examine the task manager to see how much cpu % the client.exe is using and examine the performance tab of task manager to see your total ram and CPU usage (post that too) as you have client.exe running.

While you're in the task panel check to see if client.exe has a priority of Normal to High, but don't set it for Realtime or Low as it may extremely hurt the performance.

Also pasting your results of a "tracert login.uogamers.com" could help us help you.

260 average ping (currently downloading and uploading, so assume lower)
CPU Usage fluctuates between 60 and 90% (Firefox is using the vast majority of that at the mo)

does UO lag with no other clients running in the background?

Yes, UO alone still lags.

You did not mention your RAM statistics. I am interested to see how much RAM you are using vs your total amount of RAM[physical memory] as listed on the performance tab. Also, if you run a "ping -t login.uogamers.com" for 5 minutes then press CTRL C, what is the % packet loss that is displayed?

I also hope/assume you have tried running UO without firefox open to see if firefox is the cause of your issues, depending on the pages you have open. Where did you see that you were getting 500/1200ms in UO only, and what other symptoms have you experienced?

I have 1GB of ram.

Yeah, I've tried without firefox of course.

There was a 0% packet loss.

Other symptoms? Not really sure what to say other than the lag can be bad or aweful. It was lag free when I first started playing (that was only a couple of days ago) and since then absolutely nothing has changed so I've got no idea where the hellish lag has come from.

Edit: I get the 500-1200 from -ping in the UO client.

I don't think this is a network layer issue so much as a potentially application layer issue. Have you configured UO to disable sound, enable cache of 1000 houses, enable frame skipping, and other options, or are said settings still set to default?

Configure your client to enable frame skipping, cache 1000 houses, and disable sound as appropriately configured through the options interface of the UO client. Also, disbaling circle of transparency can definitely help. Further, after applying these settings and restarting the client, let me know how performance appears.

Did all that, restarted client... 840ms - Nothing changed =(

What are the hardware specifications of your machine, including CPU speed, FSB in megahertz, graphics card specs, etc?

Those specifications should be more than sufficient to run the client well, and your ping at the network level is much better than the ping to the client when running, which is also significant. Either the client is slowing down your machine to a crawl because of game configuration or hardware specs, or something else running on your machine is limiting your resources. Download "hijack this" from Merijn.org and run it, save to log file, then post that list of stuff it displays here.

I see there is a ton of junk running on your machine that does not need to be there. I will be making a list shortly of checkboxes for those entries you will check and then "fix checked" to remove. This could break some 3rd party add-on's, but it won't hurt windows.

First, turn off system restore by going to control panel > system > restore tab. Next, use task manager to terminate these processes, if running; use the "end process tree" option by right clicking on the row for a specific process:

mDNSResponder.exe (bonjour, apple crap)
kservice.exe (p2p crap)
onestep.exe (garbage)
fts.exe (garbage)
psfree.exe (garbage)
wmpnscfg.exe (does not need to be running all the time. google VLC player and download it.)
foobar2000.exe (garbage)
lastfm.exe (doesn't need to be running all the time)
pnkbustra.exe (probably garbage)
realsched.exe (real player is JUNK)
utorrent.exe (do NOT try to run p2p clients or use torrents when playing UO. it will slow you down to hell)


Now, check the boxes for the following entries in hijack this and use "fix checked" to remove them.

After doing all this, reboot the machine, and make sure that the basics still work and that none of this stuff re-inserted itself. It's not a good idea to run downloader/hosting/p2p/media programs/services of any kind on a machine that you use for UO.

Made the changes, UO still lags although my PC probably runs smoother
