Help with starting up needed

Help with starting up needed

Hi guys - ultranoob here! ;-)

Just d/led UO & would like to look at joining up with this fine shard of yours. I have a couple issues with getting going:

- trying to install to my 2nd disk (E: drive), as I don't have 2Gb of disk space on either of my partitions on my 1st drive - it gives me a 'not enough disk space' error even though I have 25+Gb free - what gives? Does the game have to be installed on the main C: drive or something?
- lots of options in the 'How to login' section - is there any advantage to UO Gateway & Krrios' Client over just sticking a direct connect in the config file?

Any other general tips for starting up (I've never played UO before, though have played a number of mmorpgs) much appreciated! ;-)

Oops - a couple other things:

- which server/shard is best for newbs pls?
- avatars - can we upload our own if we like - I don't see any options...
- pking - is there a pkscum-free zone? >;-) or is every server a free-for-all like public games on closed BNet used to be/are? reason I ask is, roleplaying or not, I am not partial to pkers (to say the least!); having said that, I don't even know what the penalties are in UO for dying yet lol! ;-)

Okay, you have to put the game in your main C: drive.
To begin, UO Gamers Hybrid is the best shard for beginners, adept and veteran players. There is no other server with the dedication the players and staff show.

The website is a work in progress. Avatars are only for staff members right now.

Pk free zones are anywhere in town. There are given guard zones, but no trammel if thats what your thinking about.

When you are killed in UO your body is left behind. Leaving everything you had (unlessed blessed/newby) on your corpse. You have to be resurected and go back to your body to "loot" all of your belongings.

UO is very different than any other mmorpgs in the way that you can lose a lot of stuff just as fast, if not faster then you gain. So you have to be careful while you are learning the linguistics.

If you have AIM you can contact me and I can teach you a few things and answer questions you may have.

Welcome! This shard is great, and I'm sure you'll feel right at home soon. I'll see if I can answer some of your questions.

I believe so.

Monumental difference! UO Gateway allows you to view all the other free shards available in one easy to use medium, good if you like to hop shards, but not really necessary if you're going to stick with UOGamers.

The Krrios Client, or PlayUO, is a more combat centric client. It provides options that make Player vs Player combat in UO easier and provides options like visible guard lines which can come in handy if you are a murderer and want to avoid the guards. It also has options to alert members of your party as to what spells you're casting to provide better communication and cooperation during combat.

The Razor Client provides many of the options that PlayUO provides, but excludes the more combat focused aspects in exchange for other options such as recording and playing macros, recording Razor Packet Videos so you can watch all your fights, and many more options. Overall the Razor Client provides everything you could ever need for a simplified and convenient UO with some really great perks on top of that.

You'll have tons of questions, but feel free to post them in this forum and they will, more than likely, be answered in a timely and thorough fashion.

A few tips to get you started though:

Colors of Names:

There are four types of players in UO and their names correspond to their type. First are Blues they are the innocent players, and you will begin the game as a blue. Blues make up the majority of the playerbase and are generally considered "law-abiding citizens" of the UO world. Greys are another type. These are generally law-abiding citizens but they have strayed from the path temporarily. You can become grey by looting a corpse that is not yours or you did not kill, by attempting to steal, by attacking an innocent when you are a blue, or other "criminal" activities. If you go grey in town, there is a very high chance you will be killed by another player, and if you commit certain acts in town, i.e. stealing or killing from innocents, the guards will appear and instantly kill you. Reds are the third type. These are the murderers, or PKs, of UO. PK means Player Killer and they are referred to as such because that is what they do, kill innocent players. Reds are not allowed in town and will be instantly killed by the guards if they enter the guardzone and someone says, "Guards", and NPCs automatically call guards when a red is near. You can become red by killing innocent players, out of town, and having them report the murder, if more than 4 players report you murdering them, you will become a red. NPCs are the final type, these are Non-Player Characters and their names generally appear in gold. Any NPC with a gold name cannot be attacked or damaged. There are; however, blue NPCs these NPCs can be attacked and there are even some that will pay you to escort them to a certain town or dungeon. You can find out where they want to go by saying "Destination".

Common Knowledge:
Banks:
In every town you will find a bank. It's usually the building with lots of players around it, hehe, but you can ask someone in game if you can't find it and hopefully they'll show you. When you find the bank, you can access your bankbox by saying "Bank". This box is saved with the server and you can keep all your valuables in there, and you should. The bank is universal and your bankbox will be the same whether you open your bank in Trinsic or Britain.

Vendors:
Many of the NPCs in town are vendors. A vendor can teach you skills for a fee. You can single-left-click on an NPC to see the options it has to offer. Some can teach you skills, others will sell you wares. To purchase from a vendor you can use the menu by left-clicking and select "Buy" or you can say, "Vendor Buy". This will bring up a list of the items the vendor has for sale. You can also sell items in a similar way to buying, only say, "Vendor Sell", or use the menu, and select the items you wish to sell to the vendor. Certain vendors only buy and sell certain items, and teach certain skills, so be sure to look around for the right vendor.

Moongates:
Moongates are methods of travel throughout UO. At high levels of Magery you can create your own moongates and use them to create a gateway to a location you have marked with a Rune. But there are also moongates that are part of the server. They are generally close to town and if you ask someone, they will probably point you in the right direction. By stepping on the moongate you open a menu that allows you to choose which moongate elsewhere in the world you would like to travel to. Player moongates are only to the location they choose, but the world moongates are static and will always lead to the same place. Good, efficient travel.

Now for your other questions, hehe.

Nostromo said:
- which server/shard is best for newbs pls?
Hybrid. UOGamers: Hybrid has the largest playerbase, and as such, has the largest possiblity of finding someone willing to help you out. There are also more guilds on this shard and therefore you have a better chance of finding a guild to help you get on your feet and really having fun in UO.
Nostromo said:
- avatars - can we upload our own if we like - I don't see any options...
Nope, Avatars are a staff only priviledge on the forum.
Nostromo said:
- pking - is there a pkscum-free zone? >;-) or is every server a free-for-all like public games on closed BNet used to be/are? reason I ask is, roleplaying or not, I am not partial to pkers (to say the least!); having said that, I don't even know what the penalties are in UO for dying yet lol! ;-)

Town. You will receive a message that says "You are now within the protection of the town guards," or something similar. Then you know you're safe from PKs. If you see a murderer and you're within the guardzone just say, "Guards" and the guards will poof in, quickly dispatch the foe, and poof out. There are many PKs on this shard, just think of them as very skilled monsters. If you see them, you're most likely getting attacked, though there are a few out there that won't attack if you say you're new. Or you can just stay in town and avoid the reds, hehe.

Penalties for dying are slim to none. When you are slain, you become a ghost. Everything on your person that was not blessed will remain on your corpse. It can be looted by other players, even monsters, and will eventually decay. You can be resurrected by a Healer, an Ankh, or a fellow player. When you are a ghost you're invisible to the living, but can make yourself visible by talking, which is translated into, "ooOOOOOoo OOoO" or by putting yourself into War Mode, default with the Tab key. If you join a faction and are slain by another faction member you have a temporary statloss where your skills are reduced by a third, but other than that your only concern is your loot and finding a res.

Hope that helped a bit, and like I said you can post any questions you need to on this forum and they will be answered. I can also be reached on ICQ at 41537733 if you have something specific and you can't find the answer. Also, always try the Search function, 9 times out of 10, someone has asked the question you're about to and you can find the answer by simply using Search.

Wow Cebrious... that was sick man. Nice job. A lotta great information for all players... not just newbies:D. I didnt know that about PlayUO and guard lines...

Oh dear :-/. Stuck with even creating a UO account. Not a good sign.

Ok, I've stuck the following lines in my login.cfg:

; login.cfg
LoginServer=login.uogamers.net,2593

Now, I have my account creation code that was emailed to me when I d/led the free UO Gold game from the official site. But where the hell do I enter it??? I'm on the account creation page (from the link in the email: http://www.ultima-registration.com); I click on CREATE ACCT; I get a choice of NEW TO EA, or ALREADY HAVE AN ACCOUNT - 'already have' gets me nowhere (mind you, the game self-patches up to the login screen which is where I'm stuck). So, back to the web page: I click on the "Don't have an EA member account?" link. Why of why do I feel like I'm creating an official UO *Origin* account here, when all I want to do is play on the uogamers *free* shard???

Ok, moving right along...
Great. Nostromo is taken...Nostromo21 is taken. Guess I'll have to be something other than what I've been online since long before the Net even existed.

Ok. Finally picked an account name that I'll need a palm pilot to remember. Now I'm a proud member of "EA Online". I go back to run the UO Online gold game program. I enter username/passwd I just created on the web page. Now I'm at the Privacy Policy & Ts & Cs (for a game I didn't pay a cent for - good luck enforcing this EA lol!).

Rules of conduct....ok. (does anyone read all this stuff? ;-)

And now, after wasting a half hour of my life we're up to the crunch:

Aha. So now I'm expected to give them my CC to play on a free shard? Someone, pls tell me this all hasn't been a horrible waste of my time (like the EQ free trial)???

If there is no way to play with you guys short of giving EA my CC details, then I thank you for your time & will have to bid thee all farewell. If not, can someone pls put me out of my misery on how to register this wretched game for *FREE*???

Hey friend, you don't need to buy an account for UOGamers. After you download UO, double click the shortcut (that should appear on your desktop) and let it patch up. Afterwards, exit away and download a program (recommended) called UOGateway. You can get this program at www.uogateway.com

After you download and install uogateway, load it up and click in the public serverlist section. Find UOGamers: Hybrid (can be found easily if you click on the word that says 'votes' as it will bring the shard to the top.) Click on the shard and it will goto 'my servers' list. Now, goto your serverlist and you can enter the shard. Unless I missed something above, it should let you in. The accounts on here are FREE and they are auto-account. All you gotta do is insert your information into the account name and password slots and it will create the account like magic. This will allow you to make characters, etc. Hope this helps some (didn't really read much above besides your post).

If you got anymore questions don't hesitate to ask. :)

Regards,
Adian...

Tx Adian! I'll give the Razor client a go, as per Cebrious Arcane's advice, as I'm not really interested in shard-hopping. (& a big DOH! to trying to register for mmorpgs when tired & cranky to me :-/)

It sounds like you connected to EA and not Hybrid. Hybrid doesn't ask for any CC or anything like that to connect and play. Try downloading from Gigex and not the "official" website. Maybe they arrange it to take you to their servers only, or something, or make you jump through a bunch of stupid hoops for no reason.

Gigex Free Download

Also, using Razor to connect can simplify things. Here's how: Razor Install By: 2slick4u

Hey all - I'm on! Now, if work would only allow me the time to scratch myself I could actually have some fun! *grumble*

Tx heaps for your help Cebrious - I did get the right d/l first off - just got confused as to how to set up free shard access.

First thing's first: I can't pick any of the 'interesting' sounding classes (such as Samurai, Ninja, Paladin, etc) - game tells me I need Samurai Empire or Age of Shadows to do so - what gives? I really had my heart set on playing a Necromancer *sniff*.
Can those 2 expansions be d/led for free?
Also, is the 640x480 window the only was I can play the game? Looks awful small on my new spankin 1280x1024 LCD is all...NM! - just found the options window ;-) (shame I can't have a 1024 game window in a 1280 screen - I guess 800x600 in a 1024 screen will have to do - unless you guys recommend a particular setup of windows?...)

Anyhow, I'll piddle around as a Warrior for now - name's "Nostromo" - killin's the game >;-)
Look me up - I'm from Australia though GMT+10 so don't look while I snooze :)

The shard doesn't support the templates like the paladin, necromancer, samurai, and ninja. The shard is PRE-AoS, or before the age of shadows. This is why that doesn't work for you, or any of us on here. Hope that clears things up. :)

Sure does! Tx mate ;-)

I did notice however that it was rather 'jerky' when running. Is there any way to check the latency in-game?

Also, the std warrior tutorial from the UO site doesn't seem to apply. What town is it that we start in on Hybrid? Is there a map/tutorial for it? I've read a lot of the manual but am still a little apprehensive about venturing out into the wild blue yonder w/o knowing what gear to buy, what skills to train, etc, etc.

Nostromo said:

Yup, type "-ping" without the quotes.

Nostromo said:

Did you choose your city? You may be in Haven. I'm not sure if it's on this shard or not, I always customize my templates, but new players have a city called Haven, that is safe to start in, and that may be where you are.

Nostromo said:

Alt-R is the default to bring up the mini-map. You can hit it again and it will enlarge the map. Also there is a program called UO Automap. You can download that for free, here, and it is a full map of the UO world and you can size it to your liking. Everyone that comes to this forum are the "tutorial" hehe, we're more than happy to answer your questions and help you out, I'm not sure if there is a more formal version, hehe.

Nostromo said:

The key message to remember is "You are no longer within the Protection of the Town Guards" that will let you know that you're out of town and thus, a potential victim of sorts. Other than that, if you're in town, just remember "Guards" and you should do just fine, hehe. Thieves are the only real predator in town, so just keep your eyes peeled for the guy that's running around and has 4 grey corpses on the ground, he's probably a thief. You can also stay 1 space away from others so they can't steal from you, and are unable to snoop your backpack and see what you have.

Nostromo said:

What type of character do you want to be? The beauty of UO is the versatility, lay out what type of character you'd like to play and we can help you decide which template and equipment is best for that style.

Tx Cebrious - looks like I'm gonna be a thorn in your side mate! ;-)

I started off as a warrior & have pretty much only had time to wonder around town, checking shops with no idea what to buy or train (or even if I need any training?). I've checked my skills & inventory & read about half the manual.

However...

- How/where do I pick up quests?
- How do I talk to others not on my screen?
- How do I form/join a team & entice other newbs to join?
- What the hell do I actually DO in this place?
- what does GM mean? the skill arrows - up/down/shake it all around (+ the padlock) - what do they mean, how do I use them? (maybe I haven't read up to thay part of the manual yet - sorry if so).

I've read that you can own property, & I see ppl flying around on various steeds, but really, where do I go from here? Out of town & hope for the best? I'm still concerned about a premature pkscum or thiefscum spoiling my fun - I only have 1000 gold & a few bits n pieces ya know! ;-) . o O (mental note: find bank b4 exiting town on fool's errand :)

Not a thorn, hehe. I'm at work killing time, and it's my pleasure to help out new players.
Nostromo said:

-Do you want to be a character to fight other players or just monsters?
-Do you want your warrior type character to have a bit of magery or do you want to be exclusively a weapon user?

Basically you have 700 skill points to work with (Show Real in your Skills List). The epitome of skill is Grandmaster and that is 100 skill, basically that gives you 7 skills to work with, as you want to be the best you can with each skill.

-What type of weapons would you like your warrior to use?

If you can't decide this may help.
Nostromo said:

You decide your own quest and your own path in UO. You are safe in town, out of town you can fall prey to monsters or PKs. There are dungeons with monsters that you can pursue, and a world that is begging for your exploration.
Nostromo said:

There is a chat feature, but it's rarely used, hence why most players use AIM or ICQ to communicate with their friends when they're not running around together in game. Teamspeak and Ventrillo are also other options, they're vocal servers that allow you to communicate with others using a mic, which is a common option for many guilds.
Nostromo said:
- How do I form/join a team & entice other newbs to join?
There are different degrees of "team" on UO. First, you can have a party. The scroll nearest your character when you open your paper doll (Alt-P) is the Party Manifest. You can add players to your party by typing "/add" without the quotes and then target them. This invites the players and if you're invited you can either "/accept" or "/decline" depending on whether you want to join the party or not. If you want others to join, just ask, "Party?" and if they have one, you'll probably be invited, and if not, then you can start one. Guilds are another option. You can purchase a guildstone from the Provisioner and place it in your house. When you do so, you become the Guildmaster of the guild you just created and there is a wealth of information on being a Guildmaster, so we'll cross that bridge eventually, heheh. To join a guild you need to be invited by another member and accepted by the Guildmaster. Factions are another option and they are basically guilds for guilds that battle for the control of certain cities. The guilds of a faction generally work together against the guilds of the opposing factions in an attempt to gain control of the cities for their faction.
Nostromo said:
- What the hell do I actually DO in this place?
The virtual world is your oyster! There are an immense amount of options and that makes it difficult for new players because of the lack of linearality (if that's a word). Nothing gets laid out for you, think of yourself as born a grown man in the world, some people will help, others will harm, and it's your job to decide your fate and destiny.
Nostromo said:
I've read that you can own property, & I see ppl flying around on various steeds, but really, where do I go from here?
First, you'll want to train your skills, but before that you've gotta decide which ones you want, hehe. The best place to train melee is Delucia, there are a number of others there, but it is safe, and you can GM (grandmaster) all of your melee skills by fighting bulls, there is also cotton there and you can use that to craft bandages for healing for free.
Nostromo said:
Out of town & hope for the best?
Always an option, hehe. I was PK'd within my first 5 minutes on this shard (I actually looked at the clock) and I knew I was going to be playing here until I no longer could. Outside of town is dangerous, but that's what makes it fun, hehe. You can learn the hard way or the easy way, both will turn you into a seasoned vet, just different paths, hehe.
Nostromo said:
I'm still concerned about a premature pkscum or thiefscum spoiling my fun
Hey, hehe, we're not all scum. I have 7 PKs and a thief, but you're definitely right that you should keep your eyes peeled.
Nostromo said:

Everything you begin the game with is newbified. Meaning it is not blessed but as you had it when you created, the items will stay with you until you throw them away, or become a murderer (at which point newbified items can be looted).
Nostromo said:
(mental note: find bank b4 exiting town on fool's errand :)
Yes! Be sure to find the bank as quickly as possible, just as a point of reference. Every city has a bank, and it's generally good to know where each one is.

Hope that helped. Keep asking, and I'll keep answering, hehe. And I'm sure others will as well.
