If you would make mounts called Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson (like the JWilson slimes named in the Jwilson.cs file), I bet you'd get more donations.
You could even have an uber donation whereby someone coughs up some big bucks and you add their suggested name as a config file. I think the most fun I've had on my own Run UO server is renaming creatures. It's a blast once you figure out how to do it...and I know you know, you know?

I guess I have to defend myself here...
I specifically said "uber" donation. This might be $25,000.00 or whatever Ryan would set it to be. The point being is that you might get a whale (as in casino whale) who has large cash to burn. I don't know what this professionally-hosted server costs per month, but I suspect $25K would cover it for about a year.
Then again, maybe someone hates Stides enough to name a slime after him

While I do respect the need for donations, and a donation store for this shard, I think the prices on these are way over the top. Items on an OSI shard may have had real life dollar amounts equal to these because they could be sold for real life money on eBay or where ever. I honestly think you would sell far more of these, and in the long run make more money with a more reasonable donation price. These donations cost nothing to make. The system is entirely automated within the game and does not even require calling a game master to get the item. Asking for a donation in the range of $50-$100 for a game that could (though highly unlikely) be shut down tomorrow is outlandish in my opinion. Especially when it has been stated that the costs for running this shard work out to about $2 per account per year. Every item on the donation page should be an item that is not available in game, and should be in the $1-3 range. I respect the need for donations, I even respect Ryan's right to make some money for himself off of this shard for the hard work that he has done. But these prices are far beyond what these things are worth.
I know the first responses will be, "If you don't like it don't buy it." Or "If you don't like it leave the shard." But honestly, first off, I won't buy them. Secondly I am trying to help. I would not have thought Hybrid was the kind of shard that supported elitist status for real world money. I can even respect the donation islands being over $250.00 because they took substantial time to develope and design in game.
Seriously, I think for donation items you should consider all in the range of 1-3 dollars.
Steeds that cannot be gotten through vet system.
Home Decorations.
Gold at $1 per 50,000 (this is the same as $20 per million.)
Special Weapons - Same as existing weapons only with alternate art.
Special clothing - Death Shrouds, Lord British/Blackthorn Suits, etc...
Special Message Clothing - Pick your message, like "Hybrid Rocks" clothing.
Name Change Deeds
Pet Summon balls
Pet Dye... for changing the color of your pets.
If there were a variety of interesting items, and modifications that had no real effect on play balance, or even minor effects like +5 skill/stat scrolls. I think people would donate regularly, and that far more money would be generated.
While I do respect the need for donations, and a donation store for this shard, I think the prices on these are way over the top. While I understand your point, you are wrong. It is important to keep the donation items high to balance the influx of gold through the donation system. Expensive donation items retain the rarity, increasing their value. As mentioned by Cid, it also prevents the shard from being flooded with the items.
If anything changed imo, polar bear and wolf ethys should be as much as the chimera and gold should cost more rl $$

In all honesty with the amount of gold that is already on the server could it possible make a difference how much gold was brought in through donations?
Besides the fact that these items have no in game relevance at all other than aesthetic appearance. Any newbie can make a million gold in two weeks if they play enough. Also, if you notice I did not advocate the changing of the cost of gold through the donation store, I merely suggested reducing the amount you had to buy at one time. However to be perfectly honest I do not think gold or silver should be sold through the donation store, as it can adversely effect play balance. My opinion on the donation store is that it should not contain anything that truely has any effect on play. Also, while you seem to believe that the donation store should have some bearing on real world values of objects, I would completely object. I think the donation store, especially on a shard like this which has made a huge impact by pointing out the failures and shortcomings of traditional shards, would not care about real world values at all and would instead be interested in play values. The store should exist to support the real world costs of the shard, and so long as the items sold on it do not effect the games dynamics and play balance should not at all be influenced by in game values.
Seriously, stop and consider what you said about it being important to retain rarity. Why on earth does it matter how many ethereal chimeras are on the shard? It has no effect on play. All it does is look pretty. Why would Ryan care even slightly how many of them there are, or for that matter if every player on the shard chose to ride one around?

Take a look at veteran rewards for an example of market flooding. Everyone can get one, the shard is filled with them, they are worth nothing. If they were a donation item there would be no need to donate for them. You could pick one up off the ground at the bank.
High costs make them wanted. It increases game play as players work to obtain gold to buy from those that donate.
