You can't perform negative acts on your target

Some dude was looting a blues corpse and he went grey, so I try and steal from him and get this message.

What's going on?

Did you try to random steal and not target a item in his pack? Very possible you mis clicked and targeted the ground or a dirt patch, or the Ethy he was riding. If it was a target item in his pack then i dont know what to say

he might have been in a tournament recently

sometimes after a tournament, I can't attack or be attacked for a while.

Nope, had his mandrake root on last target.

He was running around Del and the tamers and no one was attacking him so I'm guessing they got the same message as I did.
