Sounds like you might be buying armor at a town that is priced at 300% taxes due to faction taxes. An easy way to find out what towns are at what prices is to go to the following link.
Factions - My UOGamers
Town's that are at -30% are a good deal, while ones at 300% are outrageous.
Towns like Delucia, Papua, Serpent's Hold, Cove, and Jhelom are outside of faction control - so you will always get standard prices there.
If you are a warrior, then killing liches with a silver weapon is good money, otherwise things like cyclops out in the lost lands are a safe bet.
Alot of people make some initial money by doing town escorts as a mage.

Lots of options here...
1 - Easiest is to get a couple of your accounts going and do escorts.
2 - Make a bunch of tailors and do BODs. Takes a while to ramp up, but you'll make some good money and you can make your own armor.
3 - Make a bunch of smiths and do BODs. Takes a while to ramp up, but you'll have millions in a short amount of time. Plus you might even hit the lottery and get 5 mil Valorite Plate SBOD. Your smiths can also make armor and weps.
4 - Play poker and win DUH!
5 - Oh...and there's always farming monsters with crap nerfed loot.
I recommend #1 if you just need 50K to keep you going. I recommend #3 (or 4) if you want a castle at some point

Haha, I saw a guy get 5 million from Poker (congrats whoever it was), it's too bad I have no experience in the game. I'll have to start learning.

BODs are Bulk Order Deeds...check out stratics and other sites for details. They used to be great on this server; when you filled them you had small random chances at decent rewards, and tons of folks did them. Now they've been nerfed, and only a few do them, but are still very profitable.
It takes about 10K to make a GM smith if you buy the ingots, but if you mine them yourself, it's free

My way when start playing.
1. Create a temporary fencer with all fighting skill GM with 60+ magery and 50 resist. (very fast and easy to train up and you can delete this char later if you want re-creating one with GM resist.)
2. Kill cyclop, lich to collect enough fund to buy 2k reagents each + 10k cash for buying cheap pets.
3. Create two characters - one mage and one tamer. Give 1k reagents to each character and macro up resist and magery to GM.
4. Train the taming skill of tamer to GM and then buy cheap mare and WW/dragon as soon as possible. Feed and wait 1 wk to feed for bonding.
4*. In the waiting period, earn money with the fencer or mage.
5. Once the pets get bonded, use them to kill elder gazer, titan, blood, balron, etc.

If you are the self sufficient type, or willing make a fisher man.
Search for builds on this, but basically you need a character who is capable of killings things over a distance (i.e. not a melee fighter), who has some resist and has GM fishing. Get a boat and farm MiB's. Fish them up and get free regs, weapons, armor and a little bit of money.
You will get a lot of crap armor, but some good stuff too. I was able to keep my dexxer stocked like this even when I only used him for PVP (and I am bad at PVP, hardly ever actually got loot, mostly got looted... a good few times a night
)

And I guess it would be optimal for me to get AIM. Seeing as nobody here uses anything else.

a bsmith, a tailor, a warrior (maybe lumberjack swords) - the starter kit for a self sufficient beginning. Take all advantage of resource gathering .. wood, (chop trees lumberjack), cotton, flax, kill sheep and shear, kill animals for leather.. buy and sell SEWING KITS/Tongs to NPC tailors/blaxmiff (1g each at bottom of list) for bods.. fill the bulk deeds and turn them in for a (nerfed) profit.!
on the real, if you pick cotton and spin it, sewing it into cloaks or something you can sell your goods out of the back of a pack animal or beetle, and make 10k in ten minutes. a quick and newbie way to make fast cash -- but it helps to make runes to each tailor shop in each town, quicker turnaround.. also mark up those resource spots!
