Yeah, I don't believe you even need quite GM boxes, but it works. Once it cuts your skill to 2/3 so from dying, I think I was able to finish it with a box in the 70 to 80 range (tinkering skill for the box you are lockpicking).
I picked a lonely shrine and put all my stuff in one backpack, and then committed faction suicide. Trained during the skill loss. Repeated until it was done. It'll get you there.
