A Guide for New Players: Ultima Online 101
By: Cebrious Arcane

Welcome:
Welcome to UOGamers! This shard is #1 for a reason, and soon you’ll experience all it has to offer. Below I’ve detailed some of the basics needed to survive in the UO World, and hopefully the examples I provide will help you undertake your journey. First you’ll need to choose a method of connecting to the server.

Clients:
You are doubly fortunate to have chosen this server. The team that developed RunUO, the software used by the majority of free shards, are the Admins of this shard! On top of that, the developers of two fantastic clients are Admins as well! You have come to the right place when it comes to the open availability of all that UO has to offer. GM Zero has detailed a step by step guide to connecting using each of the methods detailed below, you can find his guide here.

:: The Standard Client- is the most basic way to connect to UOGamers. It requires only that you install Ultima Online and connect. This also offers no additional benefits and all macros and other options will be only those provided with the standard client.

:: Razor- is a program developed by Admin Zippy and he is the lead Administrator for the UOGamers: Rebirth Shard. Razor provides many of the options that PlayUO provides, but excludes the more combat focused aspects in exchange for other options such as recording and playing macros, recording Razor Packet Videos so you can watch all your fights, and many more options. Unlike PlayUO, which is a standalone client itself, Razor is an extention for the original client and offers superior performance for many hardware platforms. Overall Razor provides everything you could ever need for a simplified and convenient UO with some really great perks on top of that. Razor offers much more, and further detail can be found here.

Color of Names:
There are five types of players in UO and their names correspond to their type. First are Blues, they are the innocent players, and you will begin the game as a blue. Blues make up the majority of the playerbase and are generally considered "law-abiding citizens" of the UO world. Greys are another type. These are generally law-abiding citizens but they have strayed from the path temporarily. You can become grey by looting a corpse that is not yours or you did not kill, by attempting to steal, by attacking an innocent when you are a blue, or other "criminal" activities. If you go grey in town, there is a very high chance you will be killed by another player, and if you commit certain acts in town, i.e. stealing or killing from innocents, the guards will appear and instantly kill you. Reds are the third type. These are the murderers, or PKs, of UO. PK means Player Killer and they are referred to as such because that is what they do, kill innocent players. Reds are allowed in town but if they commit a criminal action they will be instantly killed by the guards if someone says, "Guards", and NPCs automatically call guards when a red is near. You can become red by killing innocent players, out of town, and having them report the murder, if more than 4 players report you murdering them, you will become a red. Enemies appear orange. These are players that you are lawfully at war with. You can attack, and steal from, an orange player in, and out of, town. Players appear orange to you if your guilds are at war, the enemy is in an opposing Faction, or if the enemy is in an opposing Sect (Order/Chaos). NPCs are the final type, these are Non-Player Characters and their names generally appear in gold. Any NPC with a gold name cannot be attacked or damaged. There are; however, blue NPCs these NPCs can be attacked and there are even some that will pay you to escort them to a certain town or dungeon. You can find out where they want to go by saying "Destination".

The Map:
The map is an essential function for the new player. The default key for the map is Alt-R and it will bring up a circular map on screen. Hit Alt-R one more time, and the map gets bigger, a third time, and it will close. You can move the map around your screen so you can keep it out of the way, but still have it as a reference. Also, there is a third party program called, UO Automap, and that is a much more detailed and elaborate map. UO Automap can be attained: here.

Town:
You will receive a message that says "You are now within the protection of the town guards," or something similar. On the other hand you will get the message, “You have now left the protection of the town guards,” when you have left town. Towns are great, they are the social focal point of the game, relatively safe, and the place you’re most likely to find what you need. In town you are always safe from Player Killers but you can still fall prey to the skilled thief. If you see a murderer and you're within the guardzone just say, "Guards" and the guards will poof in, quickly dispatch the foe, and poof out. Town is also where you will find an abundance of NPC Vendors which will be detailed below.

Vendors:
Many of the NPCs in town are vendors. A vendor can teach you skills for a fee. You can single-left-click on an NPC to see the options it has to offer. Some can teach you skills; others will sell you wares. To purchase from a vendor you can use the menu by left clicking and select "Buy" or you can say, "Vendor Buy". This will bring up a list of the items the vendor has for sale. You can also sell items in a similar way to buying, only say, "Vendor Sell", or use the menu, and select the items you wish to sell to the vendor. Certain vendors only buy and sell certain items, and teach certain skills, so be sure to look around for the right vendor. There are also player run vendors. You’ll find them in houses outside of town, simply double-click the vendor and he will open his backpack with all the products the player has given him to sell as well as the prices requested.

Banks:
In every town you will find a bank. It's usually the building with lots of players around it, but you can ask someone in game if you can't find it and hopefully they'll show you. When you find the bank, you can access your bankbox by saying "Bank". This box is saved with the server and you can keep all your valuables in there, and you should. The bank is universal and your bankbox will be the same whether you open your bank in Trinsic or Britain.

Moongates:
Moongates are methods of travel throughout UO. At high levels of Magery you can create your own moongates and use them to create a gateway to a location you have marked with a Rune. But there are also moongates that are part of the server. They are generally close to town and if you ask someone, they will probably point you in the right direction. By stepping on the moongate you open a menu that allows you to choose which moongate elsewhere in the world you would like to travel to. Player moongates are only to the location they choose, but the world moongates are static and will always lead to the same place. Good, efficient travel.

Skills and Stats:
Ultima Online is a game based around Skills. You have a maximum of 700 Skill Points. These points can be distributed throughout any number of skills, though the maximum you can have in any one skill is 100*. Having 100 Skill is referred to as Grandmaster (GM). A typically “complete” character has 7 Skills at 100 and is thus considered 7x GM. Skills are what define your character’s template. You can be a mage, a melee warrior, a bard, an animal tamer, or any combination of the skills. You choose your destiny in UO. For help with raising your skills, check out Sunfire's Guide here. Stats (short for statistics) are your character’s base. Your Strength Stat determines your physical hitting power, as well as your number of hit points. Dexterity determines your swing rate and Stamina while running. Intelligence determines your mental prowess and your mana for casting spells. A typical melee fighter would have high Strength and high Dexterity with relatively low Intelligence, while a typical player using Magery would have high Intelligence and Strength with low Dexterity.
* You can attain Power Scrolls for Blacksmithing and Tailoring. These allow you to raise those two skills over the maximum 100 to a possible 120 skill.

Player versus Player:
There are predominantly two main options for PvP (or Player versus Player) combat: solo, or a guild. A solo player is one who travels and fights alone. Members of a guild bears their names above their character’s name, and typically travel together when possible. To perform an aggressive action, you need to be in War Mode. The default is the Tab key. When in War Mode you can move your cursor over other players to see what color they are and determine your action towards them. If you wish to attack another player, simply double-click their character while in War Mode and get close enough to strike. With Magery you do not have to be in War Mode and can perform aggressive actions against other players simply by targeting them with your spell of choice. PvP on UO is very open-ended and allows the players an immeasurable amount of freedom. PvP can last minutes, or seconds, and sometimes is decided by the fraction of the second. On the other hand, Factions defending the Sigils can be engaged in PvP for hours on end.

Death:
Penalties for dying are slim to none. When you are slain, you become a ghost. Everything on your person that was not blessed will remain on your corpse. It can be looted by other players, even monsters, or will eventually decay. You can be resurrected by a Healer, an Ankh, or a fellow player with sufficient Magery or Healing skill. When you are a ghost you're invisible to the living, but can make yourself visible by talking, which is translated into, "ooOOOo OOoO" or by putting yourself into War Mode. If you join a faction and are slain by another faction member you have a temporary statloss where your skills are reduced by a third, but other than that your only concern is your loot and finding a res.

Communication:
There are many options for communicating in UO. Simply typing a command and hitting enter will put the text above your head as if you were speaking. There is also a Chat Function, but it is rarely used. For communication with those not on screen, many players use AIM or ICQ. Members of a guild may communicate using “[g” (without the quotes) then typing their message after, the message will be sent to all members of the guild and is a great way to rally forces. A party can communicate by typing “/” then typing their message after, this is similar to the guild function, only this sends the message to those within your party exclusively.

Crafting:
Combat is not the only aspect to Ultima Online. One may prefer to craft wares and help further the economy of the online world. Also, a good crafter is always nice to have, as you can make almost anything you would ever need. You can be a Blacksmith: a person who uses the Skill Blacksmithing to create weapons and armor that can be sold or used. A Blacksmith needs ingots to craft his wares, so a Blacksmith is also often a Miner, as the Mining Skill is used to mine ore from the mountains and smelt it into ingots. Also, there is a Tailor: a crafter of clothing and armor made from leather, Tailors need cloth and leather, check out the Free Stuff section for some tips on getting it. Blacksmiths and Tailors may also complete Bulk Order Deeds, which are large order requests that one receives by selling goods to the respective NPC. Tinkers craft tools and traps, and Alchemists create potions that can boost your Strength, inflicting Deadly Poison, and more! Carpenters craft furniture and wooden staff weapons. Fletchers string bows and fletch arrows and bolts. Each crafting ability has a tool needed to craft its wares and by double-clicking the tool, the crafter can see all the wares available to be crafted.

Organizations:
There are many different organizations of players in Ultima Online, each offering their own benefits and circumstances.

:: A Party- is the most available option to players and can be accomplished with two or more willing participants, whenever, wherever. The scroll nearest your character, on your paper doll, is the Party Manifest. You can add players to your party by typing "/add" and then target them. This invites the players and if you're invited you can either "/accept" or "/decline" depending on whether you want to join the party or not.

:: A Guild- is another option. You can purchase a guildstone from the Provisioner and place it in your house. When you do so, you become the Guildmaster of the guild you just created and there is a wealth of information on being a Guildmaster, so we'll cross that bridge eventually, heheh. To join a guild you need to be invited by another member and accepted by the Guildmaster. Factions are another option and they are basically guilds for guilds that battle for the control of certain cities. The guilds of a faction generally work together against the guilds of the opposing factions in an attempt to gain control of the cities for their faction.

:: Order and Chaos- are collaborations of guilds that fight to preserve Order or to instill Chaos. A Guildmaster can choose to have his guild join the Order or Chaos. These Sects are constantly at war and fight against one another at every turn. It’s a way for the Guildmaster and his guild to acquire many enemies quickly.

:: A Faction- is like a guild for guilds, but you aren’t required to be in a guild to join a Faction. The factions fight against each other to gain control of the cities: Britain, Magincia, Minoc, Moonglow, Skara Brae, Trinsic, Vesper, and Yew. There are 4 Factions. True Britanians are located within the City of Britain and are allied with the monster Silver Serpent. Council of Mages are located within the City of Maginicia and are allied with the monster Wisp. Minax is located in the mountain range near the Dungeon Destard. Shadowlords is located within the Crypts east of the City of Yew. To join the faction go to the Faction Stronghold and double-click the Faction Stone out front. Factions are constantly at war with each other so when you join one; you have every member of the other three out to get you. Factions use a type of coinage other than standard gold. For successfully slaying an enemy Faction Monster or Faction Player you are rewarded with silver. Silver can be used to purchase Faction items such as a Warhorse, and can be traded to the crafters in your Faction in exchange for their crafting of temporarily blessed weapons and armor. When you kill an enemy Faction Player you are rewarded with a Kill Point, and you lose one if you’re slain. The lowest you can reach is –6 Kill Points but you can reach as high as you are able to attain. Each Faction has a system of titles that dictate rank, and rank within the faction influences the voting process for the Faction Commanding Lord, and other ranks. Each Faction has one Commanding Lord and he leads the Faction. The Commanding Lord also appoints the Finance Minister and the Sheriff in the towns your Faction controls. The Finance Minister is responsible for setting the rate of taxes within the city, and also for hiring Faction Vendors, which provide a wealth of items that are readily stocked. The Sheriff is the law of the city and is in charge of hiring guards to aid in the protection of the city. Control of the cities is gained by capturing and protecting the Town Sigils. Once a Faction Player with 70+ Stealing Skill liberates the Sigil he must return it to his Faction Stronghold and fellow Factioners help guard the Sigil until it is Corrupted. Once a Sigil is Corrupted, it is returned to the city and the town is under the rule of the capturing Faction.

Help:
Still have questions? You can use the Help Function on your Paper Doll to get in contact with a Counselor or Game Master. Simply click the Help Button and follow the prompts to put in your help request. If it is a simple question, often times you will quickly have your answer in a message form, and if it is a more complex situation, a Game Master’s presence may be required to fix the problem. Once you have submitted your request you are placed in a queue where you can go about your UO business and when a Counselor or Game Master is available, your request will be examined and you’ll be helped. Rarely there are no Counselors or Game Masters on, and you can wait in the queue for one to log on, or simply send in the Help Request at a later time.

Tips:
Here are a couple hints from myself and other players:

:: Free Bandages can be attained in Delucia easier than anywhere else:
Step 1: Gather Cotton **
Step 2: Find a Tailor Shop
Step 3: Double-click the Cotton and target a Loom
Step 4: Double-click the Spool of Thread (received after Step 3) and target the Spindle
Step 5: Repeat and collect your cloth.
Step 6: Use scissors on cloth to make bandages.
**You can replace Cotton for Wool. Wool is attained by sheering sheep with your scissors or by killing the sheep and using a dagger to get the wool from the corpse.

:: Free Leather is great because you can use leather to craft armor and footware. It’s a good practice to chop up the corpses of animals as you can also attain meat for pets and feathers for arrows, depending on what you kill:
Step 1: Double-click your dagger (or other bladed weapon).
Step 2: Target the corpse of the animal you just killed.
Step 3: Open the corpse and double-click your scissors.
Step 4: Target the pile of hides on the corpse and it becomes Pieces of Leather (Leather is a lot lighter than hides so you can carry more before you have to drop it off at the bank).

:: Skill Gain on this server is affected by how close you are to your (real) 700 skill cap. Gains will slow down rapidly at 400+. You should do your hardest skills first, such as Resist, Magery, Inscription etc. Save skills such as Eval and Anatomy for last. --Thanks Dramascus.
