Tips on roleplaying.

I copied this from http://www.khazman.com/genesis/rpIntro.html
which has been a long 2 year(maybe 3 not sure) running roleplay enforced shard. I hope this helps i just scanned through it.

Beginner's Guide: Introduction to Role-playing

The following introductory guide is an attempt to explain role-playing at its best, hopefully aiding new role-players by setting forth general guidelines and ideas for individual and social gameplay.

What distinguishes you from the mass of stupid Ultima Online players? Your character. Not whether you play a good or evil character, but whether your character can actually qualify as having a unique personality.

If you aim to just get the coolest stuff in the game and become the strongest player, then Genesis is not the right environment for you. Solid players of the shard are those who create characters with real personalities, reacting as the character would, not as the person behind the character would. When playing your character, always remember the background and development you have created thus far. It is vitally important to keep your facts straight, acting as consistent and believable as possible.

In Ultima Online, the game universe does not center around you. This is something that is very different from all single-player games. Very little actually happens to you or because of you. Quests do sometimes develop around certain players, but there are always many open perspectives and outcomes. Nothing in Genesis is predetermined; fatalism is not a system of belief that is followed on the shard.

Another matter to keep in mind is that mistakes in UO are permanent. If you say something wrong, affect another character in adverse ways...anything you do can have a permanent effect on those playing with you as well as the world you all play in. There is no way to go back and hit the reset button.

If you try to play Ultima with the goal of become the best or getting the coolest stuff, your enjoyment of the game will wilt rapidly. This is not a role-playing strategy, and is certainly not going to get you or your character anywhere.

You do not need a glittering, in-depth character concept to begin role-playing well. It is important that your goals are to become a member of the community as best as your character can. This doesn't mean that you have to be jumping on the bandwagon. Playing a character who hunts alone and is only occasionally seen is just as welcome in the community as a character who seeks to banish all evil from the world. You don't have to be the best role-player in the community, either. The versatility of role-playing is such that everyone can easily adapt to accomodate any player's needs.

If you get bored with the routine of Ultima Online, change it. That is one of the great aspects of the game - its willingness to be molded by those who play it. Your job is to go out and find the adventure, it won't always come to you. In fact, it's very uncommon for the adventures and quests to come to you. It is your obligation to take the initiative and find your own excitement, although staff members and questers are able to help you sometimes.

Finally, the main point you should avoid in role-playing is something called metagaming, also known as powergaming. A metagamer is someone who applies outside knowledge to their character, even if their character does not know that information. Just because you know how to kill a monster does not mean that your character knows how to kil the monster. You are considered breaking your role-play when metagaming, and it is prohibited in our role-playing environment. Another example of metagaming is switching to a stronger character to be more successful on a quest, although your new character should not know of the event yet. Avoid metagaming at all costs and remember that you and your character(s) are completely separate entities. What you know should not reflect on what your character knows, and the ensuing actions will show this.

Hopefully this comes as some help to those wanting to role-play. This guide will be updated or enlarged as seen fit. So what are you waiting for? Come on and create a character, and play UO the way it was meant to be played.

Alright and now my personal tips.

Make a costume, something unique. Change up your clothes on a regular basis. Maybe make a few sets of clothing to change through every couple of days. Helps RP the days.

use emotes. The easiest way is pressing "shift ;" That will automatically surround your text with *emote here*. You can also customize this color, which in turn helps other players out in recognizing the emote.

Emotes come in handy. Instead of going something like....

" :) Hi there." you can do

*smiles*(use the emote button then him enter and start your text)

*smiles* Hello how are you?

You can emote pretty much anything. *picks up the mug and takes a sip*

BUT you dont want to god mod... Like say you do not want to get into a physical fight with your oponent. You wouldnt want to emote something like this.

*Lunges at him swinging violently... Striking him in the face several times*
^ that is considered god modding.

instead end that emote early.

*lunges at the man*
Then the player you are lunging at can continue it in multiple ways.

*jumps to the right avoiding the man*

*is caught off guard and was hit by the lunging man*

*moves slightly, tripping the man and running off*

Hopefully that helps you know what i mean.

Looting....

Looting is a very big thing in Roleplay. Since characters can be ressurected. most people like to think as a dead player as knocked out. Thus how are you going to loot every single item off of a player that is knocked out without waking them?

And another thing is, how are you going to pull off their platemail leggings?

Looting is always fine with gold, since most people will have a small pouch attached to their side filled with gold. I like to think gloves as another lootable item. It would be rather easy to just pluck off a pair of gloves without really waking up the unconcious.

Looting also has to do with the type of character you are.

A noble paladin is not going to loot the fallen, but a evil thief would jump at the oportunity. Bottom line is, players work hard for their items, and do not like to see them lost. So keep looting to a minimum and a respectable limit.

Ooc (out of character)

Another big issue. Try not to talk Ooc. It ruins rp...

If you get angry someone took something from you, dont go crazy and start calling them assholes or noobs. Just respec them, and try to RP your items back.

If your truly must do Ooc. Use a party chat as other players dont tend to like Ooc.

Friendlyness. Its always a nice thing. greet the person your with. Ask them how their day is going. Ask them if theyd like to go for a hunt. or go for a drink at the local tavern. Try not to insult a new player who ahs just started rping. Wouldnt want to scare them away.
