optimize uo/computer (from uog-hybrid)

I had helped someone fix their computer with some random ideas. if your computer is slower then normal or needs to be speed up for uo (including connection) you should check out all the ideas. they aren't really in deapth, so you may have to search for drivers a bit.

please read everything.

1. http://www.windowsupdate.com get all your updates/protection
2. speed up broadband/networks:

speedguide makes a thorough but simple tweak program

3.http://www.majorgeeks.com search for spybot (remove all spyware hogging up your bandwidth in safemode. also get antivir, if you need free anti-virus software). also you can find "peer guardian" there that is a small firewall against anti-p2p groups, spyware and unwanted blocked ips. with peer guardian you have to make exceptions for all your uo servers and some programs.

4. connection patch which fixxes winxp sp2 to allow you to have more then 10 multiple connections (set to 64, 128 or 256, something larger). this fixxes alot of lag issues.

5. high risk: (i haven't tested this since pre-aos), however it replaces alot of the trees with stumps, speeding up your client and abilitiy to run through the woods. i would back up your orignal file before replacing it! admin, please remove this last section if considered a bug

6. open up the ports for the server for your router. also add uo and client to your windows firewall exception list

7. switch to firefox, stop getting IE spyware. http://www.mozilla.org

8. update all drivers (networking, video and audio expecially) from manufacturer websites or pc maker sites. often video card drivers are located at http://www.guru3d.com

9. lastly run all spyware/virus scanner software in safemode. to do so, tap the the F8 key while starting the computer. at the menu, choose "safemode" then login and scan

The problem is, when Idownloaded Spybot from www.majorgeeks.com, it installed loads of Spyware into my computer, incluiding this annoying one that changes my Homepage, and anotehr one that puts a red icon with a white cross in my tray that keeps saying that my computer is infected and I need to click on it to desinfect it.

And when I run Spybot, it crashes.

1. do not use tcp optimizer programs, they do not help.
2. there is also no need to adjust how many sockets xp can open. 10 is fine. uo only uses one connect so it isnt going to make any difference.
3. if you can conenct at all you do not need to mess with firewall settings, if theres a problem you wont be able to conenct at all.
4. video card drivers should only be got from www.nvidia.com or www.ati.com, because if you dont know what your doing unoffical drivers are not a good idea.
5. since 4.0.7a the client does not read verdata.mul

and finnaly dont fix wat aint broken because your likely to break something trying.

guru3d.com is a good website to get more stable drivers, since nvidia.com usually puts out half arsed ones. you must read the forums and do research to see whats best (78.03) .

spybot, does not have spyware. did you download the wrong one? we use this for all the campus students. MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD SPYBOT 1.4 NOT SOMETHING CALLED SPYWHORE. if not, use adaware. also do a google serach for "microsoft spyware" or "microsoft spyware tool", or "microsoft antispyware", because they have a new program for this.

the opening of more then 10 ports, helps if you have alot of lag when using more then 1 program at a time that accesses the internet. this is fine for most non-power users.

the tcp/ip program is very very very good. if you feel you are adapt at using such programs go ahead.

basically, i agree.. if its not broke don't fix it. but if your computer runs like my grandma, then why not try some of this stuff rather then format your pc weekly?

I agree with both of you and dissagree a bit...



I don't recommend downloading spbot or ad-aware from anywhere but download.com. Also you should always get your drivers from the manufactures site. They DO have beta ones there as well. If you think somone decides to go through the painfull process of building programs for the "good of humanity" chances are there the only thing on their mind is either anarchy, money, or curiosity. If I spent weeks on building "special" drivers for people, I would be threading trojan servers into the data so I can track everyone with a nvidia's habbits and sell the information to marketing reaserchers.

In fact. Don't think for a second every peice of software on your computer (even your operating system) isn't already doing so for their own uses.

Well, I live in Brazil and my pc/connection is really REALLY bad.

That landfix thing used to be very handy a time ago.
I cant download from the links in here, not even the russian one...

If anyone have this "Landfix" please PM me. Also, if this is illegal please disregard this post.
