Every Noob's Guide to Encountering Player Killers in Ultima Online

"That is probably a death gate, son"

Lets face it, Ultima Online is an unforgiving landscape. There are roving gangs of cannibals, rapists and serial killers just about anywhere you look.

Below is a look at the most sinister and dastardly personalities you will encounter in Sosaria.

The Veteran Player Killer

Danger: High

Personality: Reasonable/Bored/Deadly
Think: Predator… from the movie Predator

To overcome: wait it out, he will eventually leave you alone. Don’t piss him off.

Behavior: He may not attack on sight, instead, will watchfully approach to test your reaction, if you show a lack of fear, he may attack. However, if you show respect, he may let you pass. He is likely rich and is motivated solely for fun & new challenges. He is no longer thrilled by ruining people’s days.

Lucky for them, this PK is AFK (away from keyboard).

If he kills you: He will probably resurrect you. Or you may have to talk him into it, you may also need to talk him out of boating your pets. To do this, send a group invite while in ghost form, be respectful, keep your cool.

The Griefer

Danger: Extremely High

Personality: deadly/antisocial
Think: Werewolf/Wasp/Black Mamba

To overcome: You may need a guild to overcome this fella, or start your pvp training NOW, this guy is a pariah to nearly everyone. He will not respond to language. Recalling to your happy-safe place is always a good idea.

Wouldst thou flee during the heat of battle?

If a recall spell is not an option, HIDE!

Behavior: The most corrosive of the three. He will simply rush you as soon as he is aware of your existence. Think of a sprinter from 28 Days Later. If he is feeling particularly evil that day, he will steal your beetle, boat your mare, and say terribly disrespectful things over your dead body.

If he kills you: He will chop you up while saying “lol” or “noob” or “quit the game, you are garbage”, he may take some of your body home. He may hit ctrl +b over your body to simulate post-death rape.

Inviting him to a group while in ghost form will not help, there is no way or reason to "communicate" with this type of creature.

The Scammer

Danger: Kitten - Extremely High

Personality: Aloof yet whiney, self-centered, moody, needy.
Think: Hyena/Rat/Fungus

To overcome: Slowly ignore this guy more and more until you no longer remember him, on second thought, just remember he is a scammer.

Behavior: He may be on your AIM or Skype list, maybe you have done business with him once, but something’s not quite right about this guy… One week he’s trying to get you to lend him 500k, the next week he wants to sell you that 18x18 or castle that you’ve always wanted but he wants you to pay “early”. He swears his guild mate will transfer that 18x18/castle tomorrow, and he also insists that you are one of his dearest friends.

If he kills you: (he will only attack if he realizes he cannot scam you further, leading him on is a good thing) Beware, a scammer is either as deadly as “The Griefer” or as deadly as a paper towel.

Pretty nice thread. We do need a few more templates that one can encounter though. The opportunistic killer, the gatekiller, the false friend, the guildinfiltrator and the townkiller among other types, of course alot of murderers are combinations of several archetypes.

The opportunistic killer - Danger - Deadly to harmless. Personality - Slayer, kind of like those axewielding psychos in the old Stallonefilm Cobra. This one loves the kill and roams the land in search of easy prey. Behaviour: If he senses you are weak and defenseless (or afk) he will strike swiftly.

The gatekiller - Danger: Deadly to somewhat dangerous. Personality: This guy loves to outwit his targets, he will use a wide range of tactics to make you enter his gate. If he happens to be sloppy you may get out alive but if he has prepared well he is the spider and you are the fly. This man changes his identity and personality to adapt to the situation and once he choses you he will not stop. If you whine or beg he will only punish you more.
Behaviour: Will try to get you into his gate by any means possible, usually by using your greed or other emotions as the motivator.

The false friend - Danger: Deadly if welltrained and skilled. Otherwise only mildly dangerous. Personality: Treacherous, this person loves to befriend you, pretend that you are his new best friend and then betray you in any way he can. Behaviour: He usually takes you to his house or on a hunt and then when you least suspect it or when you are hurt by a monster that you are hunting, he will either trap you letting the monster do the dirty deed or kill you himself.

The guildinfiltrator - Danger: Extremely deadly. Personality: This man is cold, he works his way closer to his target methodically and then when the situation is suitable he strikes, think a professional hitman. Behaviour: This man will roleplay to get into his chosen guild. He may use several disguises or approaches until the door is opened and he is invited into the guild. He may then stay dormant for any period of time until he suddenly strikes. To enter guilds he usually assume the theme of the guild. If it is a tamers guild, he pretends to be a newbie tamercharacter. He is almost always a fully trained pvp char. A relative to the cold infiltrator is his opposite, the guildmember that for any reason, usually emotionally driven goes on a rampage within his own guild.

The Townkiller - Danger: Varies, the townkiller can be very dangerous or not at all, it depends on the location you are standing in and how fast you react. Personality: This man is antisocial and a pedant when it comes to cleanliness, he sees himself as a janitor keeping the towns clean and pure. He dislikes people and use any method to remove them from town. He especially despise those that are standing AFK and will do whatever it takes to kill them. Behaviour: Will gate in red characters to attack AFK people from a safe distance to stay safe from guardwhacking. Will use magery or explosion pots. May release beasts such as scorpions, dragons or drakes next to the target. May also lure different hostile monsters into town.

Should add a a new one: The veteran legendary griefer. description: anyone who plays like edalon.

As the sergent in the movie basic once told his trainees.....the most powerful weapon you have in your arsenal, is your brain

you forgot the red factioner; who will likely attack you out of boredom until enemy factioners appear, at which point he will leave you completely alone unless you interfere with his battles.

most likely he will be heavily armed and therefore extremely dangerous. One should use the utmost caution when encountering him.
